This is the closest I've gotten to being a comic book cover artist...

As a child of the 80's and a life-long comic geek, I LOVED the (pre-TV) turtles. I'm talking no pizza, no rocksteady and be-bop, black and white awesomeness. This book had a huge impact on me as a kid. Aside from being a truly original concept which revolutionized independant comics, it was published just an hour or so away in Northhampton, MA. There was a hometown attachment for me, for sure. And it was a cool book. Often dark and gritty, it was geared towards an older crowd. On top of that it was very independant which means extra effort had to be made in just finding it! If you didn't have an actual comic shop near you, you were screwed. They did NOT have this book on the rack at your local grocery store.

Then, as we all know, came the cartoon. And that was all she wrote. The mystique was shattered. The coolness - gone! I've never really had any interest in anything turtle-related since those first 20 issues published by little old Mirage Studios. I can honestly say I still do not.

But, this week IDW launched the first issue of Kevin Eastman's TMNT revamp, and it did make me a little nostalgic. There are 4 stores in New England selling a special blank sketch variant cover. The idea behind these blank sketch variants (I gather) is to bring them to conventions and have your favorite artists sketch a custom cover for you. I'm lucky enough to have one of those stores right down the street - Friendly Neighborhood Comics. (Pretty much the best comic shop ever, and my kids have no idea how lucky they are to both have a place like this, and two dorky parents encouraging them to go there every weekend!)

Well, I decided there was one artist in particular I wanted to draw the cover of this new TMNT #1 - ME! So, here you go - my first comic book cover. Limited run of one!

White Rabbit

Looks like we're back in action! This week's characters are from Alice in Wonderland, starting with the White Rabbit!

This was a very quick one. 9x12 pen and ink. No time to add color today, I'm afraid. ! I've been feeling a bit like the White Rabbit lately. I'll probably won't get a drawing up tomorrow. School night!

Gonzo

HOORAY!!!! This week's character sketches will be the Muppets!!!!! Can't say enough how pleased I am with this.

Monday's character is Gonzo... Dr. Gonzo??

I can't wait to add some color to this...

UPDATE - and here we have some color -

Harley Quinn

I actually had both of today's Dr. Suess pics drawn up yesterday, so I decided to post a bonus Friday sketch!!!

the Grinch

I did this up in anticipation of the grinch being the Friday character choice. With Blogger being all tweeked out today, I don't even know if we'll find out who today's SkottieScott character is, so I figured I'd go ahead and post it anyway.

There is Darth Vader and there is the Grinch. These two characters are true perfections in villainy. These two character are so evil, so despicable...yet they each find redemption. And thank goodness for that!!

Let me also say this - Chuck Jones' Grinch is pure, unadulterated awesomeness. There is no rendition of the Grinch better than his and no one should ever mess with it. But, I did anyway. And boy was my son p!$$ed! He absolutely HATES this drawing.

Two things stood out to me as I did this and I was pleased that they were the first things my wife mentioned when she saw it. 1. What horrible teeth the Grinch has. and why shouldn't he? Do you think Max is a dentist? Does the Grinch look like he would have a toothbrush? 2. Max. I love the tongue. This is the first time in my life I have ever drawn a raspberry and I think I nailed it.

Green Eggs and Ham

Well, looks like they are starting to get Blogger back up and running.
I always thought Sam I Am was too pushy. Thus I drew him as a bit of a crazed-pusher.
Green Eggs and Ham is probably the book I have had the most fun reading to the kids. I have a ball switching back and forth between voices. Probably an early sign of schizophrenia...

Horton

Horton is a man elephant of ACTION!!! I think he would have been played much better by Harrison Ford.

the Lorax

I always loved the Lorax growing up. Reading it to my children has caused me to be critical of the little guy, though. What was this guys job? What good was he? He never spoke up until it was too late!!!

I actually had this pretty much done before Scott & Skottie posted this morning. Just had a feeling the Lorax was going to be today's character...

And for those of you wondering about my eye injury. I do still have a hole in my eye. It is closing up slowly but surely. Obviously I am back to drawing, though!!!

Asteroid Worm

WOW! DID YOU SEE THAT, HON!? I ALMOST GOT THAT ONE!!!!

I always wondered - what do these things eat? It seems unlikely that spaceships fly by those Asteroids very often. And honestly, the Millenium Falcon literally flew into this things stomach and it STILL couldn't catch it. I don't think these space worms would make good providers. I think drawing one of these guys with a disappointed (and likely hungry) wife is pretty accurate.

Paul - Yoda

Yoda - 'nuff said

Snowtrooper

Yeah, I'm outta whack. Not following the rules at all. Oh well.

I LOVE the snowtroopers. These guys were pretty hardcore in my opinion. I rememember being very young and seeing the trailer for empire and thinking "Holy @#$%! a bunch of white-ninja-Darth-Vaders!" Of course they ended up being just as stupid and harmless as regular stormtroopers, but BOY did they bring a big @$$ gun into the mix.
I kinda hate drawing guns, btw. And I ran out of room for the front tripod leg. stupid me!

Luke & Yoda - Add a caption!!

Ok, so I didn't feel like drawing an AT-AT, so I'm probably going to screw everything up by doing Luke & Yoda ahead of schedule. Or maybe I'll get lucky and SkottieScott won't do them? I don't know. I just whipped this up at work. I'll probably work on the inking a little bit more tonight.

I always thought this was a wierd part of Luke's training. It really didn't make a lot of sense that he needed to carry Yoda around in a Baby Bjorn. I thought he was supposed to be excercising his mind?
Anyway. Let's have some fun with this. Add your caption in the comment section. I started...
"A STARBUCKS, YOU WILL FIND"

todays character...

So today's characters are AT-ATs...should I just cheat and reuse yesterdays pic????

okay, here's a quick AT-AT doodle -

Han on Tauntaun

Well, I knew I wouldn't have a lot of time tonight. Sarah's on her way to a photoshoot and I gotta get the kids squared away in time for the Bruins game tonight! I successfully predicted that today's character was going to be Han on his Tauntaun. Hooray for me.
I had this drafted up in my head and quickly turned it out during lunch break. Thus it is pen and ink on 8 1/2 x 11 copy paper. High Class! Was definately in the mood for something cartoonie. Hopefully I won't be rushing like this too often.

Here it is with a little color work.

Try to remember...

And please try to remember - I'm just a cube dwelling 9 to 5'er. Don't expect to see the outta the park awesomeness that Skottie & Scott are putting up!!!!

Paul - Wampa

I loved the Wampa toy. Remember how it had those gigantic arms with internal rubber bands so you could make him pick up rebel troops? At least that was the idea. The whole system only really helped make him applaud. I always thought it was funny when they put the toy out, because in the original version of Empire you never really saw the Wampa for more than half a second at a time. He was kind of like that sublimal image of the Devil in the Exorcist. And of course, in the quick shots you did see, it was apparent that there was some pretty cool bloodstaining going on in his fur which obviously made him pretty hardcore. Of course, then they put out the special editions and we all got to see the Wampa in all his glory.

This is the first time I have ever drawn a Wampa. I found that in drawing a Wampa it is really hard not to slip into drawing the Bumble from Rudolf.

this is a 9x12 pen & ink

and here is the little doodle i did at work -
