Usagi Yojimbo 2

Another crack at Usagi Yojimbo

This started as a little sketch I did while at work yesterday

I scanned it in, blew it up and printed it on some copy paper. I took that to the lightbox and took my first crack at fresh inks on a 9 x 12 piece of Bristol.
That led to this finished piece which actually differs from what is above.
The neck on this was driving me crazy. Usagi doesn't have a very long neck, and although my take on him is in fact that - MY take, I think Usagi's lack of neck is a pretty defining characteristic. So, after scanning this in, I photo shopped his neck and head ever so slightly to get the finished pic at the top of the post.
And yes, I did all those little dots on his shirt. Stan did it, I thought I should, too!

My wife got me some Usagi Yojimbo books for Christmas. I'm loving them!

Venom

Between moving, work and Christmas preparations, I haven't had much of a chance to draw.
Here's a Venom I did a couple years back...just to remind myself that I do like to drawn sometimes!!

Black Widow

Today's inking practice.

I've decide to practice my inking a bit because I not very good and often ruin good pencils. This is from the same black widow pencils I did for the "Maverick" cover a few months ago. I blew them up and printed out in blue on card stock.

practice practice

just practicing some inking. cause I currently suck...

the Maxx

Thanks to IDW there will be a lot of Maxx being re-issued. This makes me happy. I love the Maxx. There was a period between teenager and adult where I gave up on funny books. The Maxx pulled me back in.

I have a lot of Maxx I have drawn over the years but this is from my favorite piece. I just love that shoe!!!!!

This is from an 18x24 all pencil piece I did in 1997. Tough to scan...I pieced this together as best I could.

Comic Box signs - TMNT

Comic box signs

I decided to update all the signs on the outside of my comic boxes (which ARE all empty 12 packs!)

I started with one of the spidey boxes

Here's the old one. I think it is a good improvement.

who am I?

So yeah, ask me 15 years ago what I would say if my (at that point unborn) kid like pokemon? No F'n way!!!!

Flash forward to present day and the only drawing I do on vacation? A pokemon sketch for Johnny.

Apparently this pokemon shoots flames out of a log strapped to it's butt???

Maverick

This was a fun commission. After doing the Hulk cover a few weeks back I was asked if I would do a drawing for a boy who is a huge fan of Iron Man and the Avengers. The request was to draw him into a cover and have it ready for his 7th birthday (which is next week). And get this - the kid's name is Maverick! Pretty much needs to be on a Comic book cover with a name like that!!

And here it is all colored with text and logos.

I learned 2 things from this project. First- I am NOT a good inker. Black Widow and Hawkeye looked awesome before I inked them. My inking takes work from comic book quality to coloring book quality. Although in my defense the Blue Line paper didn't hold a fine line very well.

Secondly - Digital coloring takes a long time and I am not very good at that, either.

I also like to criticize my drawings. And of course, by criticize I mean make fun of how horrible they are. Here's a list of things wrong with this picture. The discerning eye may notice that I reused my Hulk drawing. I also used the light box to trace that Iron Man from a pic from one of the movies. Given the project I didn't feel too bad about that. I should have done that for Captain America's shield though. Geeks will note I went one ring short on the shield which prevented me from making the inner circle blue, which is what it is supposed to look like. One of these days I will smarten up and draw from reference. I bet professionals do that all the time. And finally - where the heck is the Hulks left foot?

In the end it was still a lot of fun and it gave me opportunity to start playing around with a lot of different techniques.

Hopefully, Maverick enjoys it!

Krang

I was already pretty pumped at the Phantom Variant cover for TMNT #22. But, I really flipped when I saw the back was a blank sketch cover! If you'll go back a couple pages on this blog you'll find issue #1 did the same thing, but honestly, the paper SUCKED. I hated drawing on it. Not the case with this issue though. The sketch cover stock is perfect. I knew I was gonna want to crank out a cover fast, but rather than decide for myself if I was gonna do a Casey, Shedder or Donatello, I decided to put the question out there of who I should draw. First response - Krang.  $#%^$ Krang. I hate Krang. But I figured "F it" Krang could be fun to draw! So I did. And I was right. This was fun!

Albert Einstein

Johnny and Avalyn each made drawing requests of me. Johnny's was Albert Einstein. Here are the pencils...

Vibe ... yes, Vibe

Got a request for Vibe... and I did it. I actually had to look the character up. Given the obscurity I had to go with the classic 80's rather than the spiffed up New 52 version. Note - not seen in the picture are Vibe's amazing elf boots.
I sketched this up in about 15 min this morning waiting to get ready to head to Friendly Neighborhood Comics. Just wanted to get the 15 min thing on the table to (hopefully) explain the hands...yikes.

The Bride

Here's an oldie I found while digging through my very disorganized PC. Circa 2008, I think.
This was a fun find, as Sarah and I were just discussing Kill Bill a couple nights ago. For me, Kill Bill is QT's masterpiece. Easily my favorite of his movies and a lock in my "top 10" list.
I have no idea what I've done with the original drawing unfortunately...

Kit Fisto

had to do another one. Avalyn was kind enough to give up a page from her sketch book so i could do a quick little Kit Fisto. I know the prequel trilogy pretty much sucked, but something is wrong with you if you dont like Kit Fisto!

Inked and added some color...
