Maverick

This was a fun commission. After doing the Hulk cover a few weeks back I was asked if I would do a drawing for a boy who is a huge fan of Iron Man and the Avengers. The request was to draw him into a cover and have it ready for his 7th birthday (which is next week). And get this - the kid's name is Maverick! Pretty much needs to be on a Comic book cover with a name like that!!

And here it is all colored with text and logos.

I learned 2 things from this project. First- I am NOT a good inker. Black Widow and Hawkeye looked awesome before I inked them. My inking takes work from comic book quality to coloring book quality. Although in my defense the Blue Line paper didn't hold a fine line very well.

Secondly - Digital coloring takes a long time and I am not very good at that, either.

I also like to criticize my drawings. And of course, by criticize I mean make fun of how horrible they are. Here's a list of things wrong with this picture. The discerning eye may notice that I reused my Hulk drawing. I also used the light box to trace that Iron Man from a pic from one of the movies. Given the project I didn't feel too bad about that. I should have done that for Captain America's shield though. Geeks will note I went one ring short on the shield which prevented me from making the inner circle blue, which is what it is supposed to look like. One of these days I will smarten up and draw from reference. I bet professionals do that all the time. And finally - where the heck is the Hulks left foot?

In the end it was still a lot of fun and it gave me opportunity to start playing around with a lot of different techniques.

Hopefully, Maverick enjoys it!
